Encyclopedia of Flowers II

von Makoto Azuma / Shunsuke Shiinoki

Flower artist Makoto Azuma and botanical photographer Shunsuke Shiinoki present a second edition of their vibrant anthology, two years after the first. Focusing on the ephemeral nature of flowers while working to conserve in a concrete, tangible form the passage of time they embody, the authors use two techniques. The first highlights the flowers’ features and sense of presence by picturing them from overhead. The second applies a lateral perspective to capture the life force of plants as they stretch towards the sun. In contrast to the first edition, natural light sources were used as much as possible to illuminate the exceptionally dense and colourful palettes on display.

Encyclopedia of Flowers III

von Makoto Azuma / Shunsuke Shiinoki

Makoto Azuma and Shunsuke Shiinoki collaborate once again to further their pioneering ‘Encyclopedia of Flowers’ series, which focuses in part on market-related changes that impact floristry, such as the disappearance and new emergence of species, as well as on changing the common perception of flowers. Following the first volume in 2011 and the second in 2015, this third dazzling instalment features a greater variety of styles, reflected in photographs divided into seven chapter-categories that include ‘Coexistence’, ‘Hybrid’, ‘Chiaroscuro’, and ‘Autogenesis’. The myriad arrangements done in Azuma’s singular style are expertly captured by Shiinoki’s camera.

Charlotte Dumas: The Horse In The Gourd

Sieboldhuis

A horse appearing from a gourd. This Japanese saying is used when something completely unexpected, even unbelievable, happens. It refers to a legendary immortal being who owns a horse that can be conjured as if by magic from a gourd – a reminder that, in life, the unexpected can happen. Nature is fickle and unpredictable. For Charlotte Dumas, this is an important principle. The book centres on the basic elements of life, its vulnerability and resilience, as Dumas brings myth, imagination, and the transient nature of life together. Her own images, made over the past four years in Japan, are shown with historic photographs, objects, and prints from a variety of collections. languages: Dutch/English

Observatören

Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing

At a plateau at 1830 metre altitude, just below Pårtetjåkkås peak, lies the weather station Cederqvist visited and photographed. The weather station was completed in 1914. During 1914-1918 the station was inhabited by two weather observers who performed measurements of the weather around the clock. In 1917, an accident occurred at and one of the observers disappeared in a snowstorm. The accident remains a mystery, and the body was never recovered. Because of the site's inaccessible geographical position, the station and the abandoned measuring instruments remained untouched for over a hundred years. Through this book, Cederqvist examines the gap between chance and the predictable, between the immeasurable and measurable. languages: Swedish/English

Avant la Vague - Daho 78-81

Before the wave, at the turn of the 1980s. Étienne Daho was a young man from Rennes, leading an almost ordinary life. A rock and roll enfant terrible, half angel, half punk, trying everything he could to organize a Stinky Toys concert in his town. The show led to months of debt, but Daho bonded with the legendary duo Elli and Jacno. A couple of years later, Jacno himself produced his album Mythomane. It was the end of an underground scene he had only briefly tasted. Including photographs from the time by Pierre René-Worms and by close relations of the singer, as well as flyers, posters, newspaper cuttings, notebooks, and a text by Sylvie Coma, the book gives a glimpse on the singer’s intimate life during a critical period of his career.

Anders Petersen - Valparaiso

Anders Petersen is known for taking black-and-white photographs that are both intimate and personal. This photographic essay was carried out in the Chilean city of Valparaiso in August 2014, during Petersen’s residency for the International Festival of Photography in Valparaiso. Roaming the streets and hills of the port city, he documents its everyday scenes and portrays its inhabitants – from children and women, to dogs and pelicans – in his signature direct and confrontational manner. The city’s labyrinth of cobbled alleys and graffiti-splashed buildings comes alive through Petersen’s images; the sights, sounds, and smells of a bustling coastal metropolis are tangible.

Geert Goiris - Peak Oil (Limited Edition With Print)

2017

New series of photographs by Geert Goiris, addressing the topic of our contemporary oil culture. Commissioned by Rubis Mécénat cultural fund, Goiris was given permission to the Rubis Terminal sites in Rouen and other sites in Europe. He tackles the subject from the outside, limiting himself to that particular moment when oil is seemingly without drama. This is not about the technical feat of extracting the oil from the earth, nor about the economic, social and/or geopolitical effects generated by its existence. Rather it is about the in-between stations, the moments when oil is only potentially active. Limited edition with print.
