'The Dome: The Mother of Architecture' is the heading for Bernard Hulsman's essay, introducing the almost hypnotic typological photographs of 41 domes in this book. The explosion of Catholic church building in Holland from the mid-nineteenth century, combined with a growing number of mosques, provided ample material for the project. Photographed from below, located country-wide and varied in style, the domes can't fail to inspire. According to Hulsman, ‘Every dome is beautiful if shot by a good photographer’; and ‘Each photo of a dome, whether sober or lavishly decorated, is wonderful’.
