It is very tempting to call the women Carla van de Puttelaar has photographed for this book ‘Sleeping Beauties’. After all, they are often lying on a bed and they always have their eyes closed. We know they are not really sleeping. They have adopted a sleeping pose on the photographer’s instructions. They are posing as Sleeping Beauties. We like to look at women, and then afterwards we define and describe them. We attribute characteristics to them and think up adjectives and metaphors. As if a woman must not be left undefined.
