Berthold Wolpe's first typeface, originally cut in Germany in 1932, underwent numerous name changes—from Wolpe Rursiv to Hyperion—reflecting its complex history. While other designs by Wolpe, such as Albertus, found success early, Hyperion's path remained obscure. A 1952 specimen from Bauer seemed its debut, until earlier traces from 1936 emerged, including blackletter capitals and a different name: Matthias Claudius. This discovery led to a revision of a digital revival, aiming to honor Wolpe’s original vision. Archival material uncovered in 2024 revealed political, personal, and aesthetic reasons behind its delay, capturing the dramatic evolution of design through turbulent decades.
