Autopsie: Deutschsprachige Fotobücher 1918-1945, Band 2

2014

Chrystel Lebas - Field Studies

2016

The British botanist Sir Edward James Salisbury left behind a large collection of glass plate negatives, discovered in an anonymous stack of boxes in the attic of London’s Natural History Museum. Brought to the attention of Chrystel Lebas, for whom walking has always been a part of her objective approach (she brings two cameras, one for quick snapshots and another with tripod for panoramic views), they instigated a turning point in her career. This enticingly beautiful, complex book is both an artistic research project and a scientific inquiry. Tracing Salisbury’s footsteps, Lebas observes environmental changes in the British landscape by photographing the same locations a century later.

Encyclopedia of Flowers III

2017

Makoto Azuma and Shunsuke Shiinoki collaborate once again to further their pioneering ‘Encyclopedia of Flowers’ series, which focuses in part on market-related changes that impact floristry, such as the disappearance and new emergence of species, as well as on changing the common perception of flowers. Following the first volume in 2011 and the second in 2015, this third dazzling instalment features a greater variety of styles, reflected in photographs divided into seven chapter-categories that include ‘Coexistence’, ‘Hybrid’, ‘Chiaroscuro’, and ‘Autogenesis’. The myriad arrangements done in Azuma’s singular style are expertly captured by Shiinoki’s camera.

Antoine D'agata - New York 1989-93

2016

French photographer Antoine d’Agata departed his homeland in 1983 to begin a series of travels. He has since gained notoriety with a body of work that deals with addiction, sex, personal obsessions, darkness, prostitution, and other topics widely considered taboo. D’Agata studied photography at the International Center of Photography of New York City in 1990, under the tutelage of Larry Clark and Nan Goldin. This publication offers a personal visual reflection of that time. Designed as a 48-page leporello with an insert containing 20 pages of text, including a letter written in 1991, it includes self-portraits, scratched out journal snippets, and grainy photographs of drug use.

Olivo Barbieri - Cinematography

2017

A two-part book by Olivo Barbieri, ‘Cinematography’ gathers work from 1982 to 2012 in “The End: Movie Theaters”, and from 1995 to 2015 in “Filmography”. While the first deals with the slow demise of the classic cinema, documenting shuttered, dilapidated buildings and antique projectors in a poignant series of photographs, the second moves ahead to explore emerging techniques in (digital) film production through a combination of short films and installations produced by the artist. Despite Barbieri’s nostalgia for a bygone era, the book offers an in-depth look at his optimism for the medium today, rooted in new possibilities. With an interview by Giovanna Silva.

Olivo Barbieri - Italian Quakes

Part of Olivo Barbieri’s larger project “site specific_”, which offers a new way to comprehend the language of cities, stimulating reflection on how urban space can be rethought, redesigned, and rebuilt in an incessant cycle of death and rebirth, ‘Italian Quakes’ introduces the element of natural disasters to the analysis. Launching from Gibellina, a small city in central Sicily that was destroyed by the 1968 Belice earthquake, the book explores the landscape as an autonomous object that experiences traumas. Urban shocks and rifts can appear similar, even if the causes are human actions – economic crisis, war, illegal construction, etc. – leaving lasting wounds on the living body of cities.

Werkstatt für Photographie 1976-1986

2016

Takashi Homma - Scandinavian Mushroom

2016

Various species of mushrooms from the far northern reaches of Europe are the subject of this cryptically brief series of colour photographs by Takashi Homma. Inspired by the word paintings of Ed Ruscha, Homma takes the Ruscha-style cover’s introduction of a cut-and-dried theme and expands upon it, literally and visually. It seems, however, that the photographer is not such an avid mushroom hunter, since relatively few examples are pictured. Many pages are in fact blank.

Takashi Homma - Thirtyfour Parking Lots

2016

Whether seen from above or close up, fully occupied or completely deserted, softly illuminated at night or baking under a glaring sun, the parking lots that Takashi Homma has photographed in different cities around the world are all more or less the same. Inspired by the word paintings of Ed Ruscha, Homma takes the Ruscha-style cover’s introduction of a cut-and-dried theme and expands upon it, literally and visually. Amsterdam, Vancouver, Melbourne, Tokyo, Brasilia, Chandigarh, Warsaw, Reykjavik, and Los Angeles are some of the places where wide expanses of asphalt and concrete stretch away from office complexes, fast food chains, industry, residential blocks, and more.

Takashi Homma - Various Covered Automobiles

2016

Japanese photographer Takashi Homma takes the banal to new depths with this series, which is nothing more than the title suggests. Inspired by the word paintings of Ed Ruscha, Homma takes the Ruscha-style cover’s introduction of a cut-and-dried theme and expands upon it, literally and visually. Here is a collection of images of cars bundled under wraps, parked outdoors or under buildings. Although the images are made in colour, the subjects are entirely nondescript, and their contexts are equally anonymous. Only one instance deviates from the rest, being covered by snow.
