Fiona Tan takes ‘Portrait of a Kleptomaniac’ (ca. 1822) by Théodore Géricault (1791–1824) as the starting point in a quest to discover the origins of 19th-century psychiatry. The portrait belongs to the “monomanias” series, which Géricault painted at the request of a psychiatrist who believed that mental disorders were visible in the faces of patients. Tan, fascinated by the mutability of identity and representation, explores what was understood by monomania and depictions of mental illness. Guided by the shifting boundary between what is considered normal and abnormal, her selection of works from the Rijksmuseum’s collection is insightful, inspirational, and wonderful.
