Three years in the making in the United States, Manabu Ikeda’s work ‘Rebirth’ travelled across the ocean two months after its completion for its Japanese unveiling, drawing thousands of visitors to his birthplace of Saga, following which it was shown at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa. Despite being overwhelmed by the frenzied media coverage and interviews, Ikeda witnessed first-hand the impact the work had on people. In this book he takes time to reflect anew on the circumstances that gave rise to ‘Rebirth’, not least the unprecedented devastation caused by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which occurred at the start of his US residency.
