Born in Kobe, Masanao Hirayama is a painter, illustrator, and performer based in Tokyo. His works are characterised by black lines and empty white spaces. Despite the simplicity of his drawings, the visuals he creates nevertheless stimulate our consciousness or recognition. Also known by the moniker HIMAA, Hirayama has stated that he is not intent on depicting specific objects, and would rather allow the viewer to make their own interpretations. He also makes large-scale mural interventions and contributes to various zines and books.
