This second publication in the ‘All Amsterdam’ series explores the world of galleries in Amsterdam and their place in a broader, international context. It covers the history of the city’s galleries from around 1960 to the present, and widens its focus to include the functioning of the gallery as an institution. It investigates what a gallery means in terms of substantive, economic, social and (art) historical aspects for the artist, art and the public, as well as in what ways the gallery relates to other platforms for contemporary art. Includes texts by Jan van Adrichem, Dominic van den Boogerd, Xander Karskens, Noor Mertens, Tineke Reijnders, Olav Velthuis and many others.
